History of Ontario
The name "Ontario" was first recorded in the journals of North American travellers, as early as 1641, by Father Louis Hennepin. It is generally thought to be derived from an Iroquois word.
Ontario means "sparkling" or "beautiful" water in Iroquois.
The Constitutional Act -- or Canada Act -- was proclaimed in 1791. It divided the old province of Quebec into Upper Canada (today's Ontario) and Lower Canada (today's Quebec).
